Food for Farms Program
The program takes food that we pickup that is slightly wilted, off color, or blemished and provides it to local farms and ranches to feed their animals. The program enlists local farms and ranches, with a particular focus on local farms that are owned by veterans, retired first responders, and women owned farms in the East County. Farms and ranches in our program pick up food within 12-24 hours of being picked up from stores, with vast majority being picked up within 8 hours or less of when we receive it. This makes a difference, as farms and ranches receive fresher food that is available shortly after we sort it and box it for them. Farms and ranches tell us that they save as much as $800 per month on feed, with some adding that the food that we rescue is a higher quality than some of the commercial feed that they normally would buy. We are proud to support our local farms and ranches, while decreasing waste.
