Privacy policy

Effective Date: July 21, 2026

Serving Good ("we," "us," or "our") operates free community markets and related programs. This Privacy Policy (the "Policy") describes the information we collect through our website, servinggood.org (the "Website"), and our market registration and check-in application (the "App"); how that information is used and shared; and the rights and choices available to you. This Policy is written in plain language. If any part of it is unclear, please contact us using the information in Section 11.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Member registration

Registration occurs once, in the App, and requires a working mobile phone number that we verify by sending a one-time code by text message. At registration we collect:

  • Contact information: your first and last name, email address, phone number, and ZIP code.

  • Benefits Program information: every member is enrolled in the Serving Good Benefits Program, which helps us reserve appropriate products for the people who need them. We ask whether you are a veteran (and if so, your branch of service and whether you are on active duty or a member of the VFW or the American Legion); whether you are married (and if so, whether your spouse is a veteran, with the same follow-up questions); whether you are a parent (and if so, whether you are a single parent and whether you have children under 17, including their ages); your household size; and your gender.

  • Required answers without required disclosure: every question must be answered in order to register, and every personal question offers a "Prefer not to say" option that we accept as a complete answer.

  • Needs and interests: any special product requests you select (for example, dietary needs such as gluten-free or dairy-free items, baby supplies, or pet food); whether you need special assistance at the market, such as help carrying or loading; and whether you are interested in volunteering.

  • Communication consent: your agreement to receive communications from Serving Good, which is required to register.

1.2 Market attendance

  • Check-in records: the date and time you check in, your place-in-line number (assigned at random after the check-in window closes, so that arrival order does not matter), and whether you checked in late.

  • Shopping groups: if you choose to shop with others, we record the members of your group so that everyone receives the same line number. Group members can see one another only as the last four digits of a phone number.

  • Entry pass scans: your check-in screen includes a QR entry pass. When staff scan it at the entrance, we record the time of the scan to prevent a pass from being used twice.

1.3 Text messaging records

  • Verification: when you register, our text messaging provider sends your phone a one-time verification code.

  • Announcements: market staff may occasionally send members text messages about markets and programs. We keep a history of what was sent, to whom, and whether each message was delivered.

  • Opt-out status: if you reply STOP, we record that you have opted out so that we do not text you again. See Section 4.

1.4 Safety and security records

  • Operational logs: the App keeps a short-lived log of errors and security-related events to keep the service reliable. These logs are deleted automatically after 14 days.

  • Rate-limiting records: we briefly record sign-up and check-in attempts by phone number to prevent abuse of the service.

  • Restricted access list: in rare cases, and solely to keep our markets safe, we maintain a list of individuals who may not use our services. An entry may include a name, phone number, the reason, and a photograph. Access to this list is limited to authorized staff.

1.5 Website

Our website host may collect standard technical information (such as browser type and pages visited) and may use cookies necessary for the site to function. We do not use this information to identify you.

2. How We Use Information

  • To operate markets fairly: verifying your identity by phone number at check-in, assigning randomized line numbers, coordinating shopping groups, and validating entry passes.

  • To serve you through the Benefits Program: understanding household, veteran, family, and dietary needs so that we can stock and reserve appropriate products, including age-related and family-related items.

  • To communicate with you: verification codes, market reminders, and program announcements, as described in Section 4.

  • To plan and improve our programs: we use aggregated statistics, such as the number of people we serve, check-ins over time, and a map of member ZIP codes, none of which identifies an individual member.

  • To keep the service safe and reliable: preventing duplicate or fraudulent check-ins, limiting abusive traffic, and investigating errors.

  • We do not use your information for advertising, and we do not sell it.

3. Legal Basis and Consent

We collect and use the information described in this Policy with your consent, which you provide at registration, and as necessary to operate the programs you have asked to participate in. You may withdraw consent to text announcements at any time (Section 4) and may request deletion of your registration at any time (Section 7).

4. Text Messages

By registering, you consent to receive text messages from Serving Good. Two kinds of messages are sent:

  • Verification codes, sent when you sign up and required to complete registration.

  • Announcements, sent occasionally by market staff about markets and programs. Message frequency varies. Message and data rates may apply.

  • Every announcement ends with "Reply STOP to end." If you reply STOP, your opt-out is recorded automatically and staff cannot text you again through the App. Reply START at any time to resume. Households that share one phone number receive each announcement only once. Opting out of announcements does not affect your membership or your ability to shop.

5. How We Share Information

We do not sell or rent personal information. We share it only as follows:

  • Service providers. We use a small number of providers to operate our services, under terms that limit their use of your data to providing services to us: our database and file storage provider (Supabase), our website hosting provider (Vercel), and our text messaging provider (Twilio, which processes phone numbers and message contents in order to deliver texts and verification codes).

  • Aggregate mapping. To draw our internal member map, we look up the location of ZIP codes using a mapping service. Only the five-digit ZIP code is transmitted. Names, phone numbers, and all other member information are never included.

  • Legal requirements. We may disclose information if required by law or legal process, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Serving Good, our members, or others.

6. Children's Privacy

Our services are intended for adults, and children do not have accounts. We do not knowingly collect information directly from children. The ages of household members under 17 are provided to us by the registering adult so that we can plan for diapers, baby food, children’s clothing, and similar items. If you believe a child has provided us information directly, please contact us and we will delete it.

7. Data Retention and Deletion

  • We retain your registration information for as long as you are a member.

  • Operational logs are deleted automatically after 14 days.

  • Text message history (what was sent and its delivery results) is retained so that we can account for our communications.

  • You may request deletion of your registration at any time by contacting us or by speaking with market staff. Upon deletion, your personal information is removed, including from any shopping group. Limited records that no longer identify you (for example, line numbers already issued at past markets) may be retained for our operational history.

8. How We Protect Information

  • Information is encrypted in transit, and access to member records is restricted to authorized staff who sign in through protected accounts.

  • Phone number verification, per-phone rate limiting, and server-side permission checks protect the App from unauthorized access.

  • No security measure is perfect. We review our practices regularly and limit each part of the system to the minimum access it needs.

9. Your Choices and Rights

  • Access and correction. Ask market staff to review or correct your information at any market, or contact us.

  • Text messaging. Reply STOP to any announcement to opt out; reply START to resume.

  • Deletion. Request deletion of your registration at any time, as described in Section 7.

  • Declining to disclose. You may always answer "Prefer not to say" to any personal question and still register and shop.

10. Changes to This Policy
If we change this Policy, we will post the updated version on this page with a new effective date. Material changes affecting how we contact you or what we collect will be announced at our markets or by text message.
